Our underwater hockey club practices every Wednesday at 8:30PM, and every Friday at 7:30PM at the Commonwealth Pool in Victoria BC.
March 7th, 2008
Saanich Commonwealth Place will close at 4:00 PM on Good Friday - Friday, March 21. Underwater Hockey will be canceled that evening.
This is the only response so far from SCP about possible March cancellations. All the other times look good at this point.

Today the first underwater rugby game in BC playing with official CMAS rules and an official red ball from Germany was played in Oak Bay Recreation Centre in Victoria BC.
Highlights of the game include:
The Blue team led by Nick the Brit faking a handoff and scoring an open net goal on Big Jim. Nick was his usual self showing strategy and unsurpassed conditioning that led his blue team to ultimate victory.
The ladies: Sarah, Melissa and Pattie proved that coeds belong in this spot. Sarah disregarded the fourth commandment and pushed off her father’s chest with both her feet while holding the ball with a vice grip. Patti gripped the ball like a barnacle causing minute long underwater scrums that exhausted everyone. Melissa was in the mix and did not back down from any tussle what-so- ever, even after a midnight nursing shift..
Andrew amazingly managed to push a ball into the goal with Big Jim giving him a Heimlich maneuver and blocking the goal with his big old old bod.
Stuart got a break away goal on Nick and was in on every play. Stuart’s arms encircled his opponents like a hungry giant squid looking at supper.
So much fun was had by all, that folks want to continue with this game. A big thanks to Big Jim for his ferocity and for his generosity in covering pool costs. Way to go guys!

Just a big thanks to the Victoria Nationals team members for their efforts over the weekend. For those of you who weren’t there, the Victoria team finished second in the B division! Quite the achievement, the round robin saw us have a tough draw with Vancouver, a good win against Calgary, and a tired loss to Edmonton. Come the finals, our true colours came through and we convincingly demolished the Vancouver team (6-2) to make it through to the final against Edmonton. We played a great final, scoring the first 2 goals (some might say we should have been awarded the 3rd goal too) and we had a 2-1 lead at half time. We had them well rattled. Unfortunately their fitness won through and they took the game but I was most impressed with our dedication!
Victoria had already gained the respect of the other teams by simply fielding a team for Nationals, but when we started winning games, a lot of people sat up to take notice! I was personally impressed with how each and every team member lifted a few gears, it was incredible to notice the difference in all of you!
A few key moments from the competition…
- Yes I was the first (and only?) member to take a penalty… hey it was to save a goal!
- Vice-Captain Patrik and Big Jim combining to score a goal against Vancouver A-Division National Team!
- Patrik scoring that goal by sending a ~63 foot flick over Roger’s (Vancouver) stick (that doesn’t happen every day!)
- Patti’s ‘crushing blow’ to the ‘big guy’ on the Vancouver team (I particularly enjoyed that one)
- The birth of the “Victoria Demons” - our new team name
- … and many more
Next challenge… send a team to a competition?
Captain Brad

Friday April 13 and 27 are regular practice sessions
Friday April 20 we can start at 8:30 instead of 7:30. We will have to move lane ropes.
There are swim meets on Friday May 4 and June 8. We have booked Monday May 7 at 8:30 and June 11 at 9:00 instead.
Friday May 18 the Underwater Hockey Nationals organisers have requested a 7:30 practice time for a Junior team training clinic. I contacted Melanie and it is not certain whether this practice will go ahead or not. A number of our Victoria people will be playing in the Nationals so I am not sure whether there would be a need for a practice that Friday (those not playing please respond with your interest or not). We are leaving a decision on that date until we have more information.
We have had a week off hockey. Lets see some good turnouts this week.
Mark
